Many degenerative conditions can affect the retina. Collectively
these are known as macular dystrophies and include Macular Degeneration,
Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt Disease, Cone Rod Dystrophy, retinoschisis
and other degenerative diseases of the eye. Age Related Macular Degeneration
(ARMD) is the most common form, with problems typically not presenting
until the 5th, 6th, 7th or even the 8th decade of life. The macula is
the central portion of the retina with the densest concentration of the
photo receptor cells that allow vision, and it is the area that is responsible
for our sharp central vision. Unfortunately, this is the area that is
most profoundly affected in macular degeneration. Deterioration and even
total loss of central vision is the hallmark of ARMD.

Progression of the disease
The underlying problem with macular degeneration probably involves
the abnormal formation of proteins such as the ABCR protein discussed
above that are needed in the membranes of the cells of the eye to allow
proper functioning of these cells. 80% of the activity of any cell is
concentrated in chemical reactions and metabolic activity at the region
near the cell membrane, and improving the function of the cells at this
level is the goal of microcurrent stimulation. In a sense, the problems
with macular degeneration are rather trivial at the cellular level, for
if the geneticists are correct, the underlying problem of macular degeneration
is present from birth, yet symptoms do not even appear until a person
is in their 60's, 70's or 80's. We have treated several professional airline
pilots who had perfect vision at the age of 60 when they retired.
Why doesn't a disease like macular degeneration cause loss
of vision when you are a teenager? Because your body is able to repair
the damage that is occurring faster than the damage can occur. The goal
of the nutritional support and the therapies is to tilt the balance back
towards healing.
As macular dystrophies progress, all of the different types
of cells in the retina are affected, including the connective tissues
that hold everything together and the blood vessels. In later stages,
there is a decrease in blood flow to the retina, and this creates its
own additional problems. As the disease progresses further, the deterioration
in the structure of the retina and the poor blood flow can result in bleeding
or leakage from weakened and abnormal vessels.

The Better Eye Health Program
The program of treatments used by Dr. Miller is designed to support
the health of your eyes and your vision. The eyes as well as the brain
and spinal cord are all capable of regeneration. These therapies promote

- Seminars with Damon Miller, M.D.
Two days of in-depth education and training in all
of the disciplines included in our therapeutic approach. This is a hands-on
program, with training and feedback. All the materials and equipment
are included. The seminars are held several times a year in northern

is required to hold a space.
- Four Hours of Private Sessions with Dr. Miller
Individual appointments with Dr. Miller can be scheduled
by calling the office. Includes full instruction in all the therapies,

- Home Treatment Program
Provides training videos or DVP's and large print
step-by-step instructional workbook. This program offers all the equipment

The Better Eye Health Program itself is actually a combination
of several of the newest tested therapies designed to do everything that
is medically possible to allow healing and regeneration to occur. These
integrated therapies are not done to the patient in a doctor's office,
but rather they are treatments patients learn to do for themselves at
home. Although none of the treatments is difficult to perform, they must
all be done on a regular basis to gain optimum results. The six components
of this safe and effective program include:
- Microcurrent Stimulation
This involves the use of a very low current of electricity
which passes through electrodes connected to an eye patch placed over
both eyes, to stimulate the damaged eye cells to repair and regenerate
themselves. Simple to perform, this painless treatment is conducted
20 minutes, five days a week. Equipment matters, and we only use the
best.
- Color Therapy
This involves the viewing of colored lenses that
can enhance the vision pathways that process both light and color. This
is not for color blindness. Rather, it's a safe and effective method
of strengthening the eye by using specific therapeutic light frequencies.
- Acupressure
Acupressure is performed around the orbit of the
eye and elsewhere on the body. This is done in combination with color
therapy to stimulate the vision pathways.
- Nutritional Supplements
This daily supplement program provides the eyes with
all the supplements necessary for regeneration and repair. This includes
lutein, taurine and omega-3s to repair eyes and B vitamins, minerals
and digestive enzymes for overall health.
- Therapeutic Exercises

A History of Successful Outcomes
Grace Halloran, PhD, and August Reader, MD, a San Francisco ophthalmologist,
helped conduct clinical trials back in 1995 using key elements of the
Better Eye Health Program. Patients were treated with a combination of
microcurrent stimulation, color therapy, acupressure and acupuncture.
Dr. Reader evaluated these patients both before and after
the treatments. While he found no improvement in the control group of
untreated patients, he did find a marked improvement among those who were
treated with the Better Eye Health Program. The results were impressive,
with 89% of the treated patients showing significant improvement. This
improvement included the ability to read at least two additional lines
or better on standard eye charts.
Dr. Miller compiled the results of his first 120 patients,
where he found that 80% of the patients had significant improvements in
their vision.
Over the years, hundreds of patients have been treated successfully
through the Better Eye Health Program's integrated approach. And the Better
Eye Health Program itself has been featured on the Today Show in New York,
in the Townsend Letter, in the Lions Club Magazine and at the 2003 convention
of the American Association of Retired People in Chicago.
